Bird Conservation Nepal with Bird Conservation Network, Kailali organized two days long "National IBAs- Local Conservation Groups Meeting & Bird Fair 2017" at Sukhar, Ghodaghodi, Kailali on 15-16 February 2017. The program was supported by Norwegian Ornithological Society (NOF), NORAD and Birdlife International.
The first day was an interaction program where BCN and 16 Local Community Groups from different parts of the country shared their current efforts on conservation, challenges and opportunities. After presentations from Ishana Thapa, Director, Jyotendra Jyu Thakuri Senior Program Officer, Krishna Bhusal Vulture Conservation Officer, Rajendra Gurung , General Secretary of BCN, LCGs also shared their experience on working with BCN in various projects. Chief Guest Ishwori Neupane, Parliament Member from Kailali said, “We appreciate BCN’s effort for organizing a national level event at Ghodaghodi, one of the important bird areas of Nepal”. “I will share this important message of conservation in Central Level where our leaders are drafting country’s new constitution” she further added.
The second day started early morning with Bird Race where participants were divided into 4 different groups and sent to different places to count and list the found birds within an hour. The group “Plum headed parakeet” was declared winner for listing most within the time frame. Then began the bird fair where BCN and LCGs decorated their stalls with banners, posters, merchandizes, publications etc. Various documentaries on conservation were shown to the participants in fair. More than thousand people from different schools, colleges, business group, and community participated in the fair. “BCN wanted to organize such event since long and Maghi-Home stay was our first choice” Said Ishana Thapa. “We want more and more people to come to this magnificent place and enjoy best hospitality and unique culture of Tharu community”.
