Nepal celebrated "10th National Conservation Day"
with the theme 'Community-based
Conservation for Sustainable Development' on 24th of September 2016 at Rastriya
Sabha Griha (City Hall) Kathmandu. The program was organized by the Ministry of
Forest and Soil Conservation and nine Conservation consortium partners, Bird
Conservation Nepal (BCN), Environmental Camps for Conservation Awareness
(ECCA), The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD),
National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC), Nepal Forum of Environmental
Journalist (NEFEJ), Wildlife Conservation Nepal (WCN), International Union for
Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Wildlife Watch Group (WWG), World Wide Fund for
Nature (WWF).
President Bidhya Devi Bhandari inaugurated the program
chaired by Honorable Minister for Forest and Soil Conservation, Shankar Poudel.
The two hours long program included various programs as, Video on 'Community
Based Conservation: Contribution for Sustainable Development',
awards/scholarship distribution, publication launch. This day also commemorates the 10th
anniversary of the tragic loss of nation's conservation heroes, who lost their
lives in a helicopter accident on 23 September, 2006.
Similarly, Bird Conservation Nepal's Jatayu Scholarship 2016
was granted to Ramesh Kumar Basel and Khim Bahadur KC to undertake research on
vultures of Nepal as a partial fulfillment of their master's degree.
