Bird Conservation Nepal organized an interaction and
inception program on “Protecting the critically endangered vultures of
suklaphanta wildlife Reserve and Kailali district, Nepal through
community–based integrated approaches.” at Dhangadhi Kailali on 4 April, 2014.
Chiefs and representatives from District level stakeholders including
government line agencies and local level community-based organizations from
Kailali and Kanchanpur districts were present in the program.
Fifty six participants including Chief District Officer in
Kailali and Chief guest at the programme Mr Bed Prakash Lekhak, Assistant Local
Development Officer at Kailali Mr. Yogedra Bdr. Chanda, Chief at District
Police Office Mr. Kailali Mohan Raj Joshi, Chief at District Livestock Service
Office, Kailali Dr. Biyan Kumar Karna,Chief at District Livestock Service
Office, Kailali Dr. Padam Sing Dhami, Assistant Forest Officer, Kailali Mr.
Bharat Prasad Shrestha, Assistant Forest Officer Kanchanpur Mr. Bir Bdr.

Kailali, Neha Sinha from BNHS India, media personnel and members of
Earth, Dhangadi, Samaiji CFUG, Kailali, Shivashakti CFUG Kailali and Nature
Guide Association Suklaphanta used the forumto discuss on current efforts of
vulture conservation, current and emerging threats to conserve vultures in
Kailali and Kanchanpur districts and probable opportunities and challenges to
implement the new project. They also made a commitment to support vulture
conservation activities in their areas.
Dr. Sushila C. Nepali, Chief Executive Officer at BCN
explained the recent strategies of BCN to conserve birds in Nepal. Mr.
Khadananda Paudel, Vulture Conservation Officer at BCN explained overall
history of vulture conservation in Nepal linking up with the need of new
project to work on stopping illegal use of diclofenac and build capacity of
local NGOs/CBOs to conduct activities for the conservation of vultures in
western lowlands of Nepal. The interaction programme concluded the need to stop
the illegal use of diclofenac and save vultures from contaminated food in
Kailali and Kanchanpur districts of Nepal.
