World Wetlands Day 2016 - Nine Lakes On Ramsar List
02 Feb 2016
This year world wetlands day marked a remarkable enlistment
of nine lakes of Pokhara on Ramsar List. With the effort from government of
Nepal, Pokhara Valley Lake Protection Committee, District Development Committee
and other consortium partners nine more lakes in Kaski district were listed
under the Ramsar Convention on the occasion of World Wetlands Day 2016. During
an event organized on 2nd February 2016 at Pokhara, Ramsar Secretariat at
Geneva, Switzerland Mr. Lew Yong handed over the certificate to honorable
Minister for Forest and Soil Conservation Mr. Agni Prasad Sapkota which
certifies the inclusion of Fewa Lake, Rupa Lake, Begnas Lake, Khaste Lake,
Kamal Pokhari Lake, Guide Lake, Nyureli Lake, Dipang Lake and Maidi Lake in the
list.
With inclusion of this year's nine lakes of Pokhara – Nepal
now holds the figure of 10 Ramsar sites in total that are registered in Ramsar
list. The international listing of these lakes is important because it now
holds the global attention for its sustainable conservation.
The Ramsar Convention, an intergovernmental treaty providing
the framework for national action and international cooperation for the
conservation and use of wetland and their resource, was signed on February 2,
1971 in the Ramsar city of Iran. Hence, 2nd February is celebrated as World
Wetlands Day.
This year's event was supported by the BCN, Hariyo Ban
Program, ICIMOD, IUCN, ZSL, Wildlife Conservation Nepal, Himalayan Nature, and
CFGORRP/DHM cheering a common motto of "Wetlands for our Future,
Sustainable Livelihoods".
