World Migratory Bird Day is an annual campaign
initiated in 2006 is backed by the United Nations and is devoted to celebrating
migratory birds and promoting their conservation worldwide. From last three years BCN has been
celebrating WMBD organising several events. This year BCN celebrated WMBD
organising various programmes including birdwatching, bird race, conservation
awareness and documentary shows at several part of Nepal.
Activities at Kathmandu
Bird race was organised on 14 May 2011 at
Phulchowki, one of the Important Bird Area and highest peak near Kathmandu
Valley in collaboration with Friends of Birds. All together 54 different
species were recorded on that day. Winners (first, second and third) were
provided with Birds of Nepal (A field guide in Nepali), bird t-shirts and bird
tie respectively. The theme for World Migratory Bird Day 2011, celebrated around
the world on 14-15 May, is ' Land use changes from a bird’s-eye view ' and it
highlights the negative effects human activities are having on migratory birds,
their habitats and the planet’s natural environment. The loss, fragmentation
and degradation of natural bird habitats is occurring globally and is mainly
caused by the pressures resulting from a growing human population, rapid
urbanization and unsustainable human use of natural areas. In order to
disseminate same message to general public we organized documentary (Winged
Migration) show. Winged Migration is a documentary film showcasing the immense
journeys routinely made by birds during their migrations. The film was also
nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. Show began with a
presentation from Dr. Hum Gurung, Chief Executive Officer, Bird Conservation
Nepal highlighting about WMBD and migratory birds of Nepal.
Posters, stickers and cards on World Migratory
Bird Day were distributed to all the participants.
Activities at Pokhara
A one day interaction programme was organised
for secondary level students at four schools near to four lakes of Pokhara valley
on 12 May 2011. These lakes are important habitat for migratory birds. BCN
members from Institute of Forestry voluntarily supported in disseminating
knowledge about birds of Nepal, importance of bird, bird migration, land use
changes affecting birds’ migration, vulture restaurant and roles of all
stakeholders in bird conservation.
Quiz and interaction were conducted and
provision of rewarding for the winner as incentive was made. Educational
materials such as pamphlets, brochures, booklets, posters, handout etc. were
distributed among participants in the program. These attractive materials
helped in generating concentration and interest of participant for bird
conservation.
