A tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)
among Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation (DNPWC), Bird
Conservation Nepal (BCN) and National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC) was
signed for construction of new colony aviary and overall management of Vulture
Conservation Breeding Centre (VCBC) at Kasara, Chitwan National Park on 30
August 2011. Mr. Krishna Prasad Acharya, Director General, DNPWC; Dr. Hum
Gurung, Chief Executive Officer, BCN and Mr. Juddha Bahadur Gurung, Member
Secretary, NTNC signed and agreed that this will be a great step in conserving
critically endangered vulture species in Nepal and South-Asia as well. The
financial support for the new aviary construction and operation has come from
Royal Society for the Protection of Birds/Darwin Initiative, UK.
Vulture Conservation Breeding Centre was
established in 2008 in Kasara, Chitwan National Parks to conduct captive
breeding of critically endangered vulture species that have gone catastrophic
decline across South-Asia. Since then,
VCBC is running in close coordination and cooperation among these above three
parties. Recently, VCBC is facilitated with one colony aviary and two holding
aviaries along with laboratory and CCTV facilities. Now, there are 60
White-rumped Vultures in VCBC.
