PROJECT INCEPTION WORKSHOP OF “ENHANCING COMMUNITY BASED VULTURE CONSERVATION IN WESTERN LOWLAND OF NEPAL” PROJECT

Bird Conservation Nepal organized an inception workshop of the project at Bhirahawa, Rupandehi on 7thJuly 2013.  Districts level stakeholders including government line agencies and local level community-based organizations from Dang, Kapilvastu, Rupandehi and Nawalparasi districts were participated in the programme.

Thirty four participants representing District Forest Office, District Livestock Office, District Agriculture Development Office of Dang,  District Custom Office, District Federation of Community Forest User Groups of Rupandehi and Nawalparasi districts, Nepal Para Veterinary and Livestock Association district committee of Rupandehi and Kapilbastu, Vulture Safe feeding site (VSFS) Gaindatal, Rupandehi, Kalika Community Forest User Committee, Lalmatiya, Dang,  Biswojyoti Bikash Pratisthan, Bardaghat, Nawalparasi, Sundari Community Forest User Group, Nawalparasi,  Environment Sustainable Development and Research Centre, Dang and media personnel used the opportunity to discuss on probable opportunities and challenges to implement the new project “Enhancing community based vulture conservation in western lowland of Nepal”.

Dr. Sushila Chhatterjee, Chief Executive Officer at BCN explained the recent strategies of BCN to conserve birds in Nepal and Mr. Khadananda Paudel, Vulture Conservation Officer at BCN explained overall history of vulture conservation in Nepal linking up with the need of new project to enhance the community-based vulture conservation and presented the objectives, activities and methods of this new project at the programme.

 Participants from Community based organizations and local partners of BCN at project site made a commitment to support the project and made a huge participation in project activities. They also focused that much awareness campaigns are still required to stop the illegal use of diclofenac and save vultures from contaminated food in Nepal.

Custom Office made a commitment to make the check up for dicofenac very strict and regular at boarder areas. They also did a commitment to support all vulture conservation activities in their areas.
