In partnership with BirdLife International, Bird
Conservation Nepal (BCN) has started celebrating Welcome to the Birds event
since January 2014 in Nepal in order to do advocacy and awareness raising at a
key sites or for key species by reaching out to various audiences like school
students, general public, government officials, etc.
BCN organized "Welcome to the Birds" event at
Phulchowki IBA on 14 February 2015.
Altogether 75 participants including BCN members, journalist and
students attended the event. A talk on importance of the Welcome to the Birds
event and bird migration in Nepal was given to the participants. The most
interesting part of the event was the Bird Race. The participants were divided
into four teams A, B, C and D and each team was led by a bird expert. A total
of 63 species were recorded during the race with the highest recorded by Team
"D" (53 species) followed by team "B" (41 species), team
"A" (38 species) and team "C" (30 species). The winning
teams were awarded with prizes.
The programme this year was also celebrated at various
Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) like Ghodaghodi Lake IBA, Jagdispur IBA, Bardia
National Park IBA by organizing winter bird count, bird race, etc.
