Department of National Park and Wildlife Conservation, in
close coordination with Bird Conservation Nepal published Vulture Conservation
Action Plan 2015-2019. The 5 year action plan was launched in an event held on
31st July, 2015. Mr. Tikaram Adhikari, Director General, DNPWC chaired the
program welcoming all the participants. The program witnessed immense
participation from stakeholders representing various government and
non-government organizations including media personals.
The spokesman form DNPWC, Dr. Maheshwor Dhakal highlighted
on the hostile impact ofDiclofenac (a veterinary drug) causing mass death of
vultures. He alos spoke on initiatives taken till date to ban the use of
Diclofenac in coordination with different national and regional level partners,
highlighting the status of Vultur Conservation Breeding Center. As per the new
action plan the major goal is to prevent the extinction of vulture in Nepal.
The objective is to restore viable wild populations of all species of vultures
through provision of safe food, maintenance of suitable habitat and
captive-breeding and re-introduction.
According to Dr. Dhakal what lies ahead towards successful
achievement of VCAP 2015-2019 is; focus on strong network and team work amongst
stakeholders from every aspects of life.
The program was followed by feedback session where ideas and
suggestions from the participants were honored and all queries addressed
effectively.
