The first Saturday of September is marked as the
International Vulture Awareness Day (IVAD). The tenth International Vulture
Awareness Day was celebrated on 1 September 2018 and various awareness
activities highlighting importance of vulture conservation were organized
throughout the week. Vultures are an ecologically vital group of birds that
face a range of threats in many areas. Populations of many species are under
pressure and some species are facing extinction.
Bird Conservation Nepal supported different local
collaborative organizations to organize these awareness raising programs such
as Vulture Festival in Vulture Safe Feeding Sites, Local cultural song and
dance performance regarding vulture conservation, stake holder interaction,
trans boundary dialogue, community awareness, school awareness, poem and
drawing competitions, mass rally, photo exhibition, vulture watching and
identification in 16 vulture range districts of Nepal. “A weeklong celebration
with vulture awareness activities is very fruitful to start meaningful
discourse with local government authorities”, said Krishna Prasad Bhudal, VCPO,
BCN. “It is very admiring that they are incorporating the vulture conservation
activities in their own program these days” People's active participation has
led to the success of the event which is amply illustrated by wider media
coverage. The detail of IVAD celebration events is following:-
