TRANS-BOUNDARY LEVEL WORKSHOP ON VULTURE SAFE ZONE MANAGEMENT

Following the trans-boundary exposure visit for conservationist from India and Pakistan, in early June, Bird Conservation Nepal organised a day long international workshop on "Establishing and Managing Vulture Safe Zone in Nepal" Dhangadi, Kailali on June 21, 2012. BCN invited Dr. V.P. singh (Terai nature conservation Society UP- india), Fazlur Rahman and Vikram Tiwari (Katerniaghat Foundation UP india) to share and learn initiatives of Vulture Safe Zone.Headed by Mr Gokarna Sharma (LDO-Kailali), actively participated by Shankar Hari Acharya (Ass.CDO), Dr. Diker Dev Bhatta (Regional Vet. Lab), Dr. Binod Kattel ( DLSO Chief), Bhagendra Sharma  (DPHO), Shyam mohan Lal ( DFO), Dhan Bdr. Chaudhary  (NEVLA), Kanchan Ojha ( TAL), Bijaya shrestha ( Dolphin Conservation) , local conservation partners (  BNCC-Bardia, NAGA- Kanchanpur, EARTH- Kailali, Samaiji CF and VSFS Khutiya Kailali ) and media personnel , the workshop discussed the issues of vulture crisis  and trans-boundary initiatives of Vulture Safe Zone.

Mr Krishna Pd Bhusal, Field Biologist at BCN and Mr Bhupal Nepali, Field Officer at BCN presented the safe zone initiatives and community integration in conservation of imperiled vultures in Nepal. Dr V P Singh and Mr Falzur Rahman shared the ideas and initiatives taken in Utterpradesh for vulture conservation. All the participants identified the urgent need of trans-boundary conservation for successful recovery of vulture populations. Gokarna Sharma (LDO), chief guest, committed to provide Rs1,00,000.00 ( One lakh) for vulture conservation in Kailali.
