WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 2018 CELEBRATED WITH COMMITMENT TO REDUCE PLASTIC CONSUMPTION

46th world environment day with theme “Beat Plastic Pollution: if you can’t reuse it, refuse it” was celebrated at Jawlakhel Ground, Lalitpur on June 5 2018. The event was organized by Ministry of Forest and Environment in collaboration with different environment consortium organizations such as NTNC, BCN, IUCN, WWF and Lalitpur Metropolitan.

The event that was greeted with rain began with rally early morning. The rally of students, teachers, volunteers, government officials and representatives of environment consortium partners reached Pulchowk and returned back to Jawalkhel ground.

The second and main event was chaired by Dr. Bishwa Nath Oli , Secretary, Ministry of Forest and Environment and Prime Minister K. P. Oli graced the event as the Chief Guest.  Mr. Shakti Bahadur Basnet, Forest and Environment Minister, Ragubir Mahaseth, Physical Infrastructure and Transport Minister, Chiri Babu Maharjan, Mayor of Laltipur Metropolitan, Bidhya Sundar Joshi, Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitian and important personalities from various ministries graced the event as the special guests. To show the commitment on environment conservation and efforts to reduce plastic consumption, PM announced “????? ?????? ??????? ?????????–????” and lead the conservation protection oath with participants. Both Mayors of Lalitpur and Kathmandu shared their joint effort in pollution control and new projects to replace 50 % of existing vehicles with electric and environment friendly vehicles within 5 years. Various professionals, students, organizations were awarded for their contributions in nature conservation. Dilli Bahadur Rawat, president of Environmental Sustainable Development and Research Center(ESDRC), Dang received the 'National Conservation Award 2075' from Ministry of Forest and Environment, Government of Nepal. He is currently chairing the Nepal Vulture Conservation Movement Network and leading the vulture and biodiversity conservation as well community development in and around the Dang district.

Various prior events were organized to spread the message and celebration of World Environment Day and BCN with NTNC- zoo organized “Nature Walk and Bird Watching Program” for the members of Friends of Zoo (FOZ) on May 27 at Ranibari Community Forest, Kathmandu. BCN in partnership with local conservation partners, government authorities and stakeholders celebrate the World Environment Day 2018 in Nawalparasi, Lumbini, Bardiya and Kailali.
