On 18th December 2019, Local Conservation groups working on
the birds and biodiversity from all over the country gathered at ‘The heaven of
birds’, Jagdispur lake to attend the National workshop of ‘Nepal Bird
Conservation Network-NBCN’. the representative of several groups, organization
and delegated individuals were participated in the workshop in order to share,
learn and assess the activities undertaken for the conservation of biodiversity
in the respective areas.
With the support of Bird Conservation Nepal, Jagdispur
Reservoir Bahusarokar Manch facilitate the program at local level. Participants
from Kailali, Banke, Bardiya, Dang, Kapilvastu, Rupandehi, Nawalparasi, Kaski,
Jajarkot, Palpa, Gulmi, Makawanpur, Kathmandu, Udayapur, Sunsari, Chitwan, Ilam
districts attend the workshop. Participants were representative from 28 IBAs of
Nepal. Three days long programme was held on 19-21 December 2019 at Auditorium
hall of Kanakmani Higher Secondary School.
The inaugural session commenced with the unveiling of
programme banner by the chief guest, Minister Mr. Lila Giri, Minister of
Industry, tourism, Forest and Environment, Province-5. There were invitees of
government officials i.e. Department of irrigation, Division Forest Office,
Nepal Army, Armed Police Force, Nepal Police, Lumbini Development Trust,
Department of Immigration-Belahiya, local government etc. conservation
organizations, journalists, schools and tourism sectors.
Mrs. Ishana Thapa, CEO of Bird Conservation Nepal presented
the overall objective of the workshop, organization, importance and status of
birds and biodiversity in globe and Nepal, their conservation status and our
responsibility towards the conservation. The chief guest Hon. Lila Giri, a
minister of Ministry of Industry, Tourism, Forest and Environment, Province-5
highlighted the need of institutional continuity and collaboration of concern
parties in the biodiversity conservation. Other guests of the program were
Bishnu Panthi, Dirgha Narayan Pandey, Arjun KC, Sahasram Yadav, Dharma Bahadur
Lal Yadav Parliament Members of Province 5, Chief District Officer, Gajendra
Bahadur Shrestha, Chief of District Police, Dip Shamsher Rana and
representative of district level stakeholders. Speakers appreciated the
collaboration of local conservation groups on bird and biodiversity
conservation and thanked everyone for actively participating the programme and
messaged to keep steps on nature conservation campaign.
After the end of inaugural session, all the participants
from several groups, different part of the country were inculcated on ‘Citizen
Scientist role on conservation Science’ by Prof. Kara Bahadur Shah, a vice
president of Bird Conservation Nepal. The workshop was designed to enhance the
capacity of field based Nepal Bird Conservation Network members for bird and
biodiversity monitoring and conservation. BCN primarily focused to aware the
key local Conservation Groups on spread awareness amongst the wider communities
and influencing stakeholders and agencies in positioning the IBAs management
and conservation actions. This helps to educate a reluctant public and key
stakeholder in the critical role of IBA to the well-being of the environment.
The workshop concluded with identifying the threats in IBAs of Nepal and its
conservation actions.
